How our customers are using BushGuru services

If you take a look at our services, you'll see that there are many different uses for BushGuru's networks. On this page, we tell you about how particular BushGuru customers are using their network and why.

Kerry in Silonque

Kerry was our "guinea pig" because she is Eric's wife and her needs matched those of many of our potential customers. Having an IT background, we decided she'd make a good first tester - and the bargain was that she'd get a free connection in exchange for helping us iron out the creases.

Kerry is a freelance editor, writer and web designer. As such, she works from home most of the time and needs to use the internet quite heavily for research and testing. She also happens to live in Silonque, a rural area about 10km outside Phalaborwa town. There is poor Vodacom cellphone signal and there are frequent copper cable thefts, meaning that Telkom can't maintain a landline there either. It is too far away from town to get ADSL even if the landline wasn't stolen. Kerry was scraping by with her Vodacom 3G modem (which didn't manage to go at 3G speeds in Silonque) but was increasingly frustrated by the poor internet connectivity and lack of a phone line.

At one stage Kerry and Eric decided to try out a local wireless network provider (who shall remain nameless!) but they were never able to receive a signal because they lived too far into a dip. The network needed "line of sight" to the tower, which wasn't possible without building a 100-metre aerial mast.

Using BushGuru's wireless network, Kerry is now able to surf the internet day and night, download emails whenever she wants to, and is even able to use the internet for pleasure - things like watching a video on YouTube are now possible due to the vastly increased speed. She uses Skype to make free phone calls and uses BushGuru's VOIP service to make phone calls via a Telkom landline that has been installed in town.
